Maaan, this one is easy.
Santorum knows exactly what he’s doing and what the intimation is.
As the underfunded candidate, he has to rely on the daily news cycle for the majority of his publicity. By releasing an ad that SO clearly references the Savage thing and SO clearly can’t be called out in the News as such, he’s leaving room for a Romney staffer to make fun of it on social media. Maybe some low-level kid, but perhaps a higher-up who thinks he’s discussing things in private.
That way, the evening news picks it up and ties it into the already extant narrative of Romney being a dirty fighter. Santorum needs every positive story he can get between Michigan and Super Tuesday, and this seems like a wide opening for a stupid nothing controversy.
Plus, because “butt juice” could never be explicitly mentioned on the heartland news sources, curious parties who are perhaps outraged by this new information will have to google it themselves. Then they’ll get even more outraged. Suddenly, you’ve made an emotional connection.
If I’m Romney, I’m begging my staffers not to take the bait.
(You do yourself a disservice when you think they’re playing checkers.)
Rick Santorum made a campaign ad where he’s splattered with frothy brown liquid. NO, REALLY, HE DID.
Awesome post. So much so that I quoted Justin over at Mediaite. Hope you don’t mind, man!
This whole thing is so fucking weird.
“Comedian Justin Grace”
Ahaha, I love it. Thanks, Jon.
Also I wrote that in the bathroom at work so that officially counts as the most productive thing I’ve ever done in there.
